The Portfolio Handbook

The Portfolio Handbook

Portfolios are a bitch to make. Thats why we wanted to help. It's been a while since we were sophomores, but we never forgot the emotional roller coaster of trying to get our first job (we still go through it). Looking back, we wish we would have known what we know now. This book is for you: a collection of our knowledge passed down to you in the hopes that you become better designers, better professionals, and better people.

What's this book all about?

We, The UCID Class of 2012, created this handbook with the goal of guiding sophomore students in the process of building their first portfolios. We planned, wrote, and styled the book over the course a 10-week summer quarter. It captures all the knowledge we've learned over the years about creating portfolios. This was a great opportunity for us to give back to the program that has given so much to us as designers. We wanted to help strengthen our design community at DAAP and in the process we ended up creating something that we want to share with the broader design community.

Advice from Professionals

We reached out to a broad range of professionals for input. Learn what they want to see in your portfolio.

Advice from Former Students

We asked recent graduates to share their advice on making portfolios. Hear from former students currently working awesome jobs.

Master the Sketch Page

We break down what it takes to create those perfect ID sketch pages. Everything from layouts to how to scan and clean up analog sketches.

Tell Compelling Stories

Portfolios are about the stories you want your projects to tell.

Understand Typography

Learn typography basics. We advise you on what fonts to use, how to use different fonts together, and how to construct paragraphs.

Learn Hierarchy

Master visual flow and page hierarchy. We want to help make sure the most important part of your project is the most important thing on the page.
